Best Fish Tacos on the West Coast

The BEST tacos in the world are at SuperRica in Santa Barbara. They’re not on this list because they don’t offer fish tacos.

The List, so far:

  1.  Kiko’s Food Truck in San Diego.  The truck sits in a liquor store parking lot at the corner of Friars Road and Via Las Cumbres. The fish are crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside and you can choose an avocado-y sauce to go with them.  The cost? $5.00 for 2.  Only downside, no place to sit.

  2.

  3. Dutchman’s Seafood Place in Morro Bay.  I happened upon this place my first day in Morro Bay. The fish tacos are almost as good as Kiko’s Food Truck, and they come with yummy black beans — plus there’s a dog-friendly patio overlooking Morro Bay.  But they cost three times as much as Kiko’s.  I’ve been back twice . . . and there are two more days to go here.

  4.

  5. Point Loma Seafoods in San Diego. I used to come here to buy fish to cook at home because it’s the best seafood market in San Diego. The fish tacos are good but not as good as Dutchman’s.
Point Loma Seafoods in San Diego. They have great smoked salmon, smoked in store, which I bought to keep in hotel mini-fridge for snacks.
  6.

  7. Taco Temple in Morro Bay.  You’d expect a restaurant named Taco Temple to rank higher on a “Best Taco” list.  It was good, but two things knocked it down the list: (1) The tortillas were thin and relatively tasteless, once you managed to tease them out from under the fixins’ (this was a knife-and-fork taco, not a hand-held one) and  (2)  The generous serving of black beans was bland and in desperate need of salt. The fish had a crisp delicate coating (it was tempura beer-battered cod) with sides of chipotle mayo (my fave) and mango salsa. There was a incident involving the chipotle mayo, which Annie can tell you about.  I ate the mango salsa for dessert 🙂

  8.

  9. Luna Red in San Luis Obispo. Pretty patio, but the tacos were mediocre.  Doubtless, this place will slide down The List as I sample more fish tacos on my trip.
Luna Red Restaurant in San Luis Obispo. See the Jacaranda tree in the space between the umbrellas!  The Jacarandas were in bloom all over the city and in Santa Barbara and San Diego as well.
